User Reviews about Aleratec DVD CD Shredder XC 240145 (Black)
Great for quickly shredding personal documents and destroying CDs (the CDs aren't really shredded, just cut into 3 pieces.) The paper shredder is able to do multiple pages at once and the CD 'shredder' has its own small waste receptacle so you can dump your shredded paper straight into the recycling bin without having to dig out the pieces of CD. I have used the shredded for over a month now and shredded many, many documents and quite a few CDs with no problems.
The only caveat is that I would definitely not recommend using this to shred credit cards, like CDs they are only cut into 3 pieces and not destroyed nearly enough to prevents someone getting the card number.
-- Nice compact paper/CD shredder
I own a 6-sheet Executive Machines shredder, but it doesn't shred plastic, so I got this shredder in the hopes of it being good for shredding old credit cards and such. When the unit arrived there was a crack in the basket. It is made of a much thinner plastic than the basket of my other shredder. Thankfully the crack was in the back corner where the separate bin for plastics fits in, so I taped the crack over. The motor for the machine is very heavy, much too heavy for the weight of the bin it sits in. My other shredder is also top-heavy, but not nearly as bad as this one.
I tested the plastics shredder first with an old insurance card. It took the card and managed to shred it into two pieces, so I fed it through again and managed to get it into another two pieces, then again into another two. Then I gave up and tried an old CD-R, which it managed to shred into three strips. I would not recommend this machine for shredding credit cards at all. CDs, sure, since three pieces completely destroys any hope of getting data off of them, but without good crosscutting, shredding a card with numbers you want to destroy completely is not a good plan. I tested the paper shredder last. It was okay, but noticeably slower than my existing shredder, making this machine pretty well useless for me. My other shredder, even though it can't shred plastic at all, can shred paper better and has a more durable bin.
I will say in its favor, though, that the safety power switch (you need to hold down a button in order to push the machine into its on position) is a smart touch, however the price of the whole package seems too steep for a machine that is clearly underpowered. It works, but not as well as it should. -- Not Great.
I love having this product because of all the documents and files I save to CD-R and DVD-R. There are a lot of ways for things like that to fall into the wrong hands, and this product is simple and effective to use. Up front, I will say the only real drawback - and it's actually inevitable given the nature of the materials - is the noisiness of shredding disc media. But I don't see any way around that and simply cannot fault the product for that.
All I've had before was a standard paper shredder. This unit will do that as well - make no mistake - it's pretty much an all-purpose shredder, at least as far as home use goes. It will shred credit cards, another big plus! I really don't have anything negative to say about this. I've had it for a few weeks and it's holding up well to fairly heavy usage! -- Sturdy but very noisy
First of all the quality of construction of this shredder is...pretty bad. it arrived damaged, the receptacle for all shredded discs and documents arrived cracked and broken. That said it delivers fine shredding results, although I wish the capacity were greater and that it didn't sound like the motor was going to die every time I put a disc in the smaller slot. I think there are better shredders out there with more capacity and that are less obnoxious sounding. -- So So Shredder
My shredder arrived with no damage. It is very easy to assemble, just insert the small CD/DVD/Credit Card mini basket in the corner of the main basket and set the shredder on top. If you have children you can keep the switch in the off position and it requires you to push a small button in the middle of the switch while sliding it over to the on/auto position. I do appreciate the compact size and the separate inner basket for collecting plastic shreds. The cross-cut paper shredder works very well, the CD/DVD/Credit Card slot will cut disks into three 1 1/2" strips. That is fine for CD and DVD but I am not comfortable leaving credit cards in such large pieces. I tried running a credit card through the paper slot but it just put slices into it and was not able to cut it into pieces. When I lifted the top off to empty the basket I discovered lots of crosscut shreds had stuck on the bottom of the shredder blades that fell on the floor so I had a mess to clean up. -- Nice compact light duty shredder
